 Think Pieces

Designing Units & Courses

For the think pieces in this chapter you should learn to use information retrieval methods, and become familiar with the major journals in the field of science education (see below). Select a problem from the ones listed below (or identify one related to the content of this chapter) and locate some key literature to help you develop a two-page think piece.

To find the key literature you should search the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) database online. Start the search by identifying the topic of your search. Analyze the topic by listing the keywords in the topic. Then refer to the "official list of descriptors" which can be found in ERIC thesaurus (See ther sample descriptors for science teaching). Going through this process will help you prepare for the search.

• How do Skinner's and Piaget's ideas on learning compare?

• What is the learning?

• What motivational strategies help students learn science concepts?

• What is conceptual-change teaching?

• In ways do student learning styles influence learning?

• What is the difference between right brain and left brain learning? What are the implications of these differences for science teaching?

• What are some metacognitive learning strategies? In what ways can these strategies be helpful to students in a science class?
