6.7d Project Learning Tree (PLT)

PLT is an environmental education project that is jointly sponsored by the Western Regional Environmental Education Council and the American Forest Foundation. The program consists of two teacher's activity guides, one for K-6 and the other 7-12. The activity guides contain hands-on, experiential activities organized around seven key unifying principles:

• Environmental awareness

• Diversity of Forest Roles

• Cultural Contexts

• Societal Perspectives on Issues

• Management and Interdependence of Natural Resources

• Life Support

• Lifestyles

The activities in the PLT are interdisciplinary, and as a result they can be used in a variety of curricula areas. This makes them especially valuable to the middle schools who are planning to develop interdisciplinary units for their students.

PLT involves students in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. The curriculum consists of ready-made lessons on trees and forest ecology that can be used to supplement existing curricula.
